"Sigmund Freud described dreams as a “royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mind.” He believed that these activities involve the substitute gratification of repressed wishes: that which we want and can’t have, we dream about in disguised form.
In this epistolary exchange, two friends report on their diverging road trips as they traverse unconscious topographies. Their dreams drive desire into motion, propelling them toward their longed-for futures.

I’ve finally stopped to pee on 55. A smooth looking woman with a knit talisman turned the corner of Clark and North Racine Avenue, opened her purse, and pulled out a picture of a horse on computer paper, I had not seen it. She was distraught and then we both suddenly and alarmingly saw the horse at a red light, it was made of diamonds and amoebically formed into a variety of shapes and angles. It bolted and we followed it, exhaustingly, to a stable in a park. The woman was now gone. The horse now lives in the stable with a number of other beautiful shimmering horses, you can hear them tinkle and chime in the wind, and you can hear the steam leaving their snouts. I approached the stable and there was a puny, pathetic looking barricade with writing on it, almost like it is a cement block wrapped in newspaper or emblazoned with text, the closer I got to the barricade the higher it shot forth from the ground, growing taller, as if it was a scrolling paywall over a new article. You stood at the base of the barricade which is now miles and miles high, stark and evil in the wind, a large shadow cast, and I could hear the horses in the stable on the other side, undisturbed. I felt as if I needed the woman to do anything else, but I felt empty, gutted, and cold. You peeled the foil from a Toblerone and made a Jeanette Winterson reference, asking me to sit in the heather with you, which looked digitized.

You married me to my husband under the fruit trees while my boyfriend watched from the aisles. You stood between us and sewed our chests together. Kiwis wrapped their vines around our necks while overripe plums pulverized themselves under our heels.
When you fucked me that night you wore leather. Juice ran down my thighs and my husband watched you lick it up."
